What Is Canine Influenza?

Dogs can get some of the same diseases and viruses that humans do, including the flu. Canine influenza virus, also referred to as dog flu, is a respiratory virus that dogs of all breeds and ages can contract. Dog flu can be brought on by either the H3N2 strain, which originates from birds, or the H3N8 strain, which originates from horses. Both strains have, unfortunately, adapted to dogs.

While the virus is highly contagious to pups, it is, thankfully, rarely fatal. However, early detection can help ensure that your dog gets the proper treatment. That is why dog owners should monitor their pet’s behavior and look for the virus’s signs and symptoms, which include:

  • Reduced appetite
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Sneezing
  • Discharge in the eyes or nose
  • Fever
  • Reduced energy

These symptoms may mirror other conditions, like kennel cough, so it’s a good idea to have a veterinarian take a look to make the determination and plan the proper treatment. While in some cases, the symptoms may be mild or even nonexistent, canine influenza can lead to other serious complications like bacterial pneumonia. Because this condition can be fatal, it’s incredibly important to note any changes in your dog’s behavior and speak to your veterinarian if you suspect they may have dog flu.

What Preventative Measures Can You Take?

Pet owners always want what’s best for their furry friends, which is why the simplest form of prevention is giving them the canine influenza vaccine. At Westwood Regional Veterinary Hospital and Pompton Lakes Animal Hospital, we provide quick and effective vaccinations to help keep dog flu at bay. This vaccine can prepare your dog’s immune system to fight both strains of the virus. Typically, two initial doses are given, two to four weeks apart, and annual booster shots are administered thereafter.

Since the vaccine can be given even to young pups, you’ll be able to protect them earlier. Some side effects may occur in rare cases, including facial swelling, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, and allergic reactions. However, keeping dogs up to date with vaccines is crucial to maintain their health and allow them to play freely with other animals while remaining protected.

Vaccination isn’t the only thing you can do to help protect against the dog flu. First, you’ll want to keep them away from other animals that may be infected. Given the contagious nature of the virus, dog flu can spread quickly at dog parks, kennels, boarding facilities, and doggy daycares. You’ll also want to keep them away from surfaces like food and water bowls, toys, collars, and other items that may be contaminated. It’s also smart to wash their paws after visiting dog parks, groomers, and other facilities that may have germs from unvaccinated pups.

How Is Canine Influenza Treated?

Because dog flu shares many symptoms with other respiratory conditions, a veterinarian will first need to diagnose it. This can be done with a test known as a Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) panel, which involves taking a sample from the pet’s nose, throat, or eye area. Bloodwork and other forms of testing may be suggested if there are signs of pneumonia, as this will need to be addressed right away.

Once the flu is identified, much of the treatment process involves ensuring they are hydrated and get enough rest. Unless the case is severe, most pets will recover on their own within a few weeks and will see no real lasting effects. During the recovery period, it is vitally important that you keep the infected pet away from other dogs and cats, as the flu can be transmitted easily even several weeks after it is contracted.
